3. Adapter

Adapter is an easy to use video and audio converter for the Mac. With it you can quickly convert your files to other formats for playback on a mobile device, or anything else. Adapter also has the ability to download and convert YouTube videos to MP3's.

4. Air Video Server

Air Video Server is the Mac companion to the Air Video iOS app. If you have Air Video for iOS, you can install the mac app to be able to stream any video from your computer, no matter where you are, over WiFi or 3G.

5. MPlayerX

MPlayer X is an application that can play nearly every video format you throw at it. Its a great tool to have, and at the price of free, why not? It is very similar to VLC (mentioned below), with the exception that it has a much nicer interface as well as lacks the ability to convert files.

6. Handbrake

Handbrake is a great, easy to use video converter. Its best known for its ability to import DVD's to an iTunes friendly format. At the great price of free, its a must have. Note: DVD importing requires that VLC (mentioned below) be installed.

7. VLC

VLC is a free multimedia player that can play nearly everything you throw at it. The latest update adds a great user interface, along with support for Bluray playback, making it one of very few applications on the Mac that support Bluray. VLC is required to be installed in order to import DVD's with Handbrake (also mentioned above).

8. MPEG Streamclip

If you need a powerful video converter with tons and tons of options, then MPEG Streamclip is for you. Unless you have very specific needs for MPEG Streamclip, a simpler application such as Adapter (mentioned above) should be suitable.

9. Plex

Plex is a media center for your Mac. It allows you to sit back, relax, and browse through the movies and music on your TV, as well as from various online media sources.

10. iDVD

iDVD is part of iLife, which comes free on every Mac. So odds are you already have it. iDVD makes creating DVD's with your favorite home movies and photos easy as pie.

11. MakeMKV

Make MKV is a dead simple application for ripping Blu-ray disks to your computer. As the name says, it will rip the discs to the .MKV format, which can then be converted with a program such as Handbrake or MPEG Streamclip.

12. Mac Blu-Ray Player

Mac Blu-ray Player is the first Blu-Ray player available for the Mac. In addition to Blu-rays, the App can plan nearly any other video or photo format.

 

Note: Blu-ray playback requires an external Blu-ray drive or a Blu-ray disk ISO.
